A lovely day with the Bears

at the Bear Sanctuary Prishtina, Kosovo

Hello fellow readers of my blog. The previous weekend, I opted for an outdoor adventure. I wanted to get my lil one away from the TV, iPad, iPhones or any other modern technology devices and indoor play areas. Instead I wanted us to engage with the nature fresh air, water, grass, mud. A few weeks back I remembered I was exposed to a Billboard Poster advertising the Bear Sanctuary Prishtina (hint Bill Board advertising still quite effective) and decided that it would be an added bonus to spend a day outdoors and see cute bears too. Lucky for us it was rather a warm sunny Sunday in October.

My lil one was so excited and so was I. My hubby agreed to join our lil adventure - so it was a three party nature adventure yey. We drove down to the Bear Sanctuary Prishtina, as we got closer the nature looked so beautiful that day, the sun was bright and warm, the Badovci waters were glitzy and shiny. The only put off I must inform you was the bumpy road toget to the Sanctuary, however, this only lasted about 5 minutes, and definitely well worth the strife with the road.

Before entering the Bear Sanctuary we got to see some lovely sheep’s & goats, a Sheppard dog, and a Sheppard so lovely to be away from the city. We had to bring our phone’s out only to took some lovely photos of the lovely sheep’s, the greenery; we did some chasing around of the sheep’s. So much fun!

Then we made our way to the Bear Sanctuary, upon entry we were greeted by a pleasant young girl who gave us some pre – entry info about the sanctuary and the bears. Upon entry you get to see five bears. It was so pleasant to see how much better of these rescued bears were now. The cages were much more spacious, open air, small paddling pool for the bear, some wooden toy structures.

Each bear were cutely named and had information about their background, personality and what their favorite foods are. If they were partners or siblings they would share a cage, otherwise each bear had their own cage.

We very lucky to be there at feeding time and got a whole load more info about the bears, the sanctuary, the benefits of the working staff benefits. The staff, were so friendly and informative. We were told that the heaviest bear is Eor, who weighs about 300KG and he can eat about 75kg of apples in one feeding time. The bears have a special diet that includes fruits and veg, meats and other suitable foods to keep them healthy. The bears get regular health and hygiene check ups.

I was amazed to see such great conditions made for the bears. This sanctuary is a project of the FOUR PAW animal welfare charity and Austrian investment. I do not want to give you too much information since you may want to go and visit for yourself.

The project is still ongoing and a road extension should be completed by 2015.
